As LGBTQ Pride Month wraps up, here are 3 people we highlighted for 2022 that we think are worthy of mention in an LGBT-inclusive curriculum.
- Alan Turing
Turing is credited as the creator of modern computer science and AI. He put his talent to use breaking German codes during World War II.
- James Baldwin
Baldwin is a renowned American writer and playwright who wrote about the Black American experience. His famous works include “Go Tell It on the Mountain” and “Notes of a Native Son.” Click here to read his famous 1963 speech “A Talk to Teachers” about the challenges of teaching the myths and realities of U.S. history.
- Bayard Rustin
Rustin worked side by side with Martin Luther King Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement as his chief organizer and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington. Despite his important role in the fight for racial justice, his contributions are rarely celebrated as he hid from the spotlight to hide his homosexuality. He later turned his talents to LGBTQ activism in hopes of living openly as a gay man. Click here to watch this 3-minute bio about Rustin.
