Factors such as teacher shortages, increased enrollment, and decreased funding have, unfortunately, made overcrowded classrooms a common feature of schools in the U.S. The consequences of overcrowding classrooms run deeper than too many students. It includes strain on teachers, limited access and support for students, and more, resulting in decline of school funding, student attendance, and motivation.
The number of students per class impacts teachers’ ability to effectively engage with each student. No having funding for materials, or ways to individualize lessons for students with disabilities, it starts an unfortunate cycle where students felt neglected and disengaged. This decline in attendance had a direct impact on the funding allocated to schools, as attendance rates often play a role in determining the financial support received. Teachers are also given less planning time while managing overcrowded classrooms, instead of providing quality instruction and trying innovative teaching strategies
Apart from teachers, overcrowding leads to students feeling discouraged from seeking individual help and having to rely on peers for support. While peer collaboration is valuable, it should not be a substitute for personalized guidance from teachers who possess the expertise and knowledge necessary to address individual learning needs. This leads to students getting left behind and forgotten.
Having more students also creates greater noise and distractions — even in classrooms that are effectively managed. The increased noise level can make it harder for kids to concentrate, affecting learning outcomes, and more difficult for teachers to focus, leading to more stress and possible burnout on both sides.
