Janet Campbell Hale

Janet Campbell Hale was a Native American writer and professor. Hale earned a degree in rhetoric from the University of California, and her writing style was compared to Hemingway. Hale’s work often explored issues of Native American identity and discusses poverty, abuse, and the condition of women in society.

Charles Eastman

Charles Alexander Eastman was an American physician, writer, and social reformer. He was among the first Native Americans to be certified in Western medicine and was one of the most prolific authors of American Indian affairs in the early 20th century. His first book, Indian Boyhood, is a compilation of stories he had been telling his own children about his childhood and became quickly popular. He published thirteen books in all, two co-written with his wife, who served as his editor.

N. Scott Momaday

Navarre Scott Momaday was an American novelist, short story writer, essayist, and poet. His first novel House Made of Dawn won a Pulitzer Prize and brought attention to Momaday as a leading figure in a Native American literary renaissance.

Louise Erdrich

Karen Louise Erdrich is a Native American author of novels, poetry, and children’s books featuring Native American characters and settings. In addition to her numerous award-winning novels and short story collections, Erdrich has published three critically acclaimed collections of poetry, Jacklight (1984), Baptism of Desire (1989) and Original Fire: New and Selected Poems (2003), all focused on Native American lifestyles and influences.
