Helen Rodríguez Trías was an American pediatrician, educator and women’s rights activist. She was the first Latina president of the American Public Health Association, a founding member of the Women’s Caucus of the APHA, and a recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal.

Elsa Salazar Cade
Elsa Salazar Cade was a Mexican American educator and entomologist. She has garnered numerous awards for her work and for her philanthropic efforts and is named one of the ten best science teachers in the United States by the National Science Teachers Association for developing an award-winning interactive science curriculum. Cade also served on the staff of the Buffalo Research Institute on Teaching for Education and supported numerous non-profits and foundations.

Jaime Escalante
Jaime Escalante was an educator who taught math to troubled students in Los Angeles, becoming famous for leading many of them to pass the advance placement calculus test. Seeking a better life in the United States in the 1960’s, Escalante taught himself English and earned a college degree. He was played by Edward James Olmos in the 1988 film Stand and Deliver.

Arnulfo Trejo
Arnulfo Trejo was an internationally known librarian, educator, and author who helped lead the movement to grow Hispanic culture in libraries by increasing collections of Latino literature and Spanish-language material across the United States. His role in raising awareness and value of Hispanic culture provided substantial growth and learning opportunities to ensure individual and collective successes.
