Audre Lorde

Audrea Lorde was an American writer, professor, philosopher, feminist, poet, and civil rights activist. Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. She was central to many liberation movements and activist circles, including second-wave feminism, civil rights, and Black cultural movements, and struggles for LGBTQ equality. Lorde’s poetry is known for the power of its call for social and racial justice, as well as its depictions of queer experience and sexuality.

Mark Oshiro

Mark Oshiro is a queer Latinx multi-award-winning author of young adult books. In his book, The Insiders, Oshiro tells a story about Hector navigating a school as a new student. Facing relentless bullying for being gay and different, Hector finds a magical room that changes based on his needs and meets two other kids who also are searching for a safe space. This story shows LGBTQ+ teens that they belong and bring tremendous value to their communities. It encourages all readers to be true to themselves.

Jules Machias

Jules Machias is an author, editor, artist, and athlete who loves dogs beyond all reason. In her middle-grade novel, Both Can Be True, Machias writes about two kids joining forces to save a dog, but wind up saving each other. This story plays around with self-identity, acceptance, gender fluidity, and other LGBTQ+ themes.

Phil Bildner

Phil Bildner earned a master’s degree in early childhood and elementary education and taught fifth and sixth grade for 11 years in History and Literature. Bildner is a numerous New York Times-bestselling author, including the NCTE Charlotte Huck Award Honor-winning middle grade novel, A High Five for Glenn Burke. In his writing, Bildner uses LGBTQ+ themes to connect and educate the youth of valuing being true to oneself.
